In association with Gray's Bookstore (mapped
location, web site), the Class of 2010 is proud to bring you
this website, where you can preorder your textbooks and supplies for your first
semester at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. In the past,
students have purchased their books during Orientation week. While that
is, of course, still an option, we hope that allowing you to reserve your books now will save many of you time and hassle come Orientation and provide you
with more free time to get know your fellow classmates before you embark on your
journey. Here is some basic information:
- Books and supplies will be available for pickup during Orientation
week.
- Textbooks and dissection kits can be picked up at Gray's. Payment for textbooks\dissection
kits will be
upon pickup.
- Gray's will do their best to fill orders with used textbooks when
possible, but used books are not guaranteed.
- Supplies (except the dissection kits available through Gray's) must be paid for in advance (either through PayPal or check\money
order) and will be available for pickup during Orientation week in the lobby
of the medical school.
- All online payments can be made using PayPal's secure website. All
major credit cards are accepted and a PayPal account is NOT required.
- We polled students on their opinions of each book. Of those that
responded, we posted the % that used a given book and how useful they felt
that book was on a scale of 1-5 (5 being essential, 3 being of average
helpfulness, 1 being not needed)
- Please place all orders by Wednesday, July 11th.
- Please send all Gray's Order Forms and questions here.

2007-2008 Student Gross Anatomy Notes
A University of Louisville School of Medicine tradition-every year the
previous class publishes a comprehensive set of notes designed
specifically for the UofL Gross Anatomy class. Each year they are
revised and edited by students and the Class of 2010 has put many hours
into updating and editing material. These notes are an excellent and
efficient way to study and learn gross anatomy. Many students do
very well using only the student gross notes and a copy of Netter's Atlas
of Human Anatomy.
Features include:
- Comprehensive coverage of all material covered in gross anatomy,
broken down by examination, with special emphasis placed on frequently
tested material.
- Hundreds of references to specific Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy
plates
- A listing of many important\frequently tested relationships for each
exam
- A review outline for each exam
- A final exam review section based off of old exam questions
- A comprehensive outline for Embryology that many students find useful
- HERE is a small sample of of the Student
Gross Notes.
The Student Gross Anatomy Notes also includes a very valuable Test File
DVD which includes:
- Gross Anatomy Exams w\answer keys (minimum of 10 old exams/exam
block)-the Gross Anatomy
professors are notorious for repeating questions and for using nearly
the same exam format since at least 1980. These old exams are
absolutely essential
for preparing for the gross anatomy written examinations.
- This used to be a regular old CD, but there is so much material, we
have had to switch to using DVDs this year!!
- Click HERE to view a sample gross anatomy
exam
- Gross Anatomy Cross Sections (guaranteed to be on each practical
exam)
- Summaries of clinical vignettes (also appear on every written exam)
- Old exams, notes, study guides for all other first year classes

- Student's Opinion:
- Percent of Class that Reported Using Gross Notes: 90%
- Average Usefulness Score: 4.1/5.0
-
- Selected Student Quotes:
- "Gross
notes are the best resource because they emphasize testable material
and are easier to understand."
- "The student gross notes are extremely useful. It saved me a
lot of time and offered some really good study mnemonics. Great in
combination with a Netter's."
- "Gross
Notes, Netters, and the gross notes CD is all I used - you need all
three and you'll do well in gross"
Price: $130
Important note: These notes are not reviewed or officially approved of by
the Gross Anatomy faculty. While we have gone to great lengths to ensure the
information contained within is accurate and while almost all students use them
as a valuable tool, they cannot be used as an authoritative source for
challenging a professor's exam questions.

Atlas of Human Anatomy, 4th Edition
Frank H. Netter
This is the gold standard for anatomy atlases-Dr. Netter's beautifully
illustrated and colored plates clearly show important relationships
between structures from multiple viewpoints. It is essential for
both gross anatomy lab and for studying gross anatomy in general.
There are quite a few anatomy atlases out there-many with color
photography (as opposed to illustrations). Invariably, by the end of
the semester, the other atlases are gathering dust and everyone is
studying from Netter's atlas.
- Student's Opinion:
- Percent of Class that Reported Using Netter's 97%
- Average Usefulness Score: 4.7/5.0

Clinically Oriented Anatomy, 5th Edition
Keith L. Moore, Arthur F. Dalley
Gross anatomy course directors suggest students select one of two books to use as the
"main textbook" for the course. Clinically Oriented
Anatomy (COA) is a very comprehensive text that actually exceeds the scope
of the course. Meanwhile, the other suggested text, Essential
Clinical Anatomy (ECA), is a toned down version of COA that is often considered to be too abbreviated.
In practice, most students use Student Gross Notes (in conjunction with
Netter's atlas) as the main text for the class and one of these textbooks
as reference. COA includes clinical correlations not found in ECA
which are guaranteed to show up on examinations and is thus the textbook
which students generally find more useful.
- Student's Opinion:
- Percent of Class that Reported Using COA: 67%
- Average Usefulness Score: 2.9/5.0

- Langman's Medical Embryology, 10th Edition
-
Thomas W. Sadler
Langman's Medical Embryology is the required textbook for the
embryology course. It is a small, compact, and concise text.
Embryology is taught by primarily by two professors, Dr. Ho and Dr.
Nettleton. Langman's is essential for Dr. Ho's lectures. There
have been some complaints that Langman's is too concise in some
areas-especially with regards to Dr. Nettleton's material. The other
text that works as a very good supplement to clear up any remaining
questions is The Developing Human by Keith L. Moore. It is
perhaps best to start with Langman's and then look into acquiring The
Developing Human if further clarification or information is
desired.
- Student's Opinion:
- Percent of Class that Reported Using Langman's: 90%
- Average Usefulness Score: 3.6/5.0
Price: $59.95 new/$44.95 used

- Histology: A Text and Atlas
- Michael H. Ross
This is the primary text for Histology and does a very good job
building on class notes. In microstructures (histology), most
professor's distribute very good notes for their lectures, but the text is
very good for clarifying confusing points and includes some electron
microscope images that often appear on the lab practicals.
- Student's Opinion:
- Percent of Class that Reported Using Histology: A Text and Atlas:
87%
- Average Usefulness Score: 3.2/5.0
Price: $66.95 new/$50.20 used

Neuroanatomy: A Programmed Text
Richard L. Sidman
This workbook, more commonly known as "Sidman & Sidman", is required
for Neurosciences, which begins midway through the first semester.
Students will be given quite a bit of time over two weeks to work independently
to complete this workbook. The book is designed to introduce
students to the basics of neuroanatomy through simple diagrams, questions,
and repetition. Students will then be given a short (and, if you did
the book, fairly simple) exam over the material before progressing into
any actual neuroscience lectures.
(Since this is a required workbook, it was not included in our student
survey)

$45.95 new/$34.45 used

Scrubs Set
For Gross Anatomy and Neuroscience Labs it is
necessary to wear scrubs. These
will be “ceil blue” surgical scrubs that are made from a thick
material. Two (2) pairs of
scrubs are recommended. You
may also want to devote an old pair of athletic shoes to be worn in lab.
Price: $20.00 / set

Nitrile Gloves
Gloves are another supply that will be required for the gross anatomy
lab. These gloves are strong, durable, and latex free. Last
year's class recommended purchasing two boxes for the semester.
However, a number of people ran out and required a third box. So, we
recommend purchasing either two or three boxes-each box comes with 100
gloves.
